On 1st February, 1915, the 1st Yorkshire light Infantry battalion of 83 Brigade, 28th Division moved to Ypres where they relieved French troops in trenches either side of the Ypres-Comines canal. On the following day, 2nd February, D Company, in the front line to the north of the canal, came under heavy shell fire between 11 and 11.30am and then again for an hour in the afternoon, from 3-4pm. No infantry attack followed as some expected it might but there were thirty casualties from the shelling. At some stage of the day, Arthur Vanhinsbergh was killed. |
